Well, the year is coming to an end, and there have been a lot of changes in our lives. Some of the changes have been very positive. The best change is that my daughter is doing better. Her spelling is improving, I can see so much progress from the point we were at a year ago.
We have tried lots of things to help her spelling. We have been inventive, and some of those things worked. Some things didn’t work. The reasons why some things work and some things don’t aren’t always obvious from the beginning. It is really in hind sight that I can tell what had the biggest impact. Hind sight is 20/20, right?
Playing games helps keep spelling from being monotonous work. Being active helps my daughter use excess energy so that she can concentrate. Proof reading has become a way for her to practice recognizing misspelled words, and that is half the battle. If you know when it is spelled wrong, then you at least know you have to make an improvement.
Flash cards were a bust for us, they just did not fit my daughters learning style. As a homeschooler, I have to remember that one of the reasons we home school is so that we can be flexible in how I teach, so that it fits how she learns.
I’m hoping to see the improvements continue into the new year. I hope that your year has been happy, prosperous, and forward moving. And with that thought, I wish you Happy Holidays!
